Kokako got into their current predicament through the actions of people over the past
few hundred years. People brought the predators and cleared much of the habitat. Now
it is people who are charged with the responsibility of trying to remedy that damage.
This website has been developed by private enthusiasts to proudly promote the work of
the Kokako Recovery Programme.
Any donations made on-line to this site will go directly
into kokako conservation projects prioritised by the Kokako Recovery Programme, to
systematically restore the species and its habitat.
The Kokako Recovery Programme involves two main partners - the Department of Conservation
and the Royal Forest and Bird Protection Society.
Alongside them work numerous others, members of community organisations and private
individuals; all bound together by their enthusiasm to save the magic of the kokako.
The Kokako Recovery Group brings together the collective experience of field
practitioners, researchers and conservation managers who together guide progress on
the Kokako Recovery Plan.
You can
download the current
kokako recovery plan from the Department of Conservation website. This is a 2.1 MB pdf file.
